The Ethics of AI use and Mental Health Treatment
1. What is AI (and what it’s not) – This will benefit therapists and clients by explaining the nature of generative AI and large language models (LLMs). Clarifying how these programs work will make it possible to understand their strengths, as well as the weaknesses that lead to ethical concerns.
2. 3. What the ethics are - Therapists will benefit by reviewing statements from the American Counseling Association, American Psychological Association and National Association of Social workers on the ethics of mental health practitioners’ use of AI. Commonalities will be reviewed as well as any significant deviations from one another.
4. Supplementing therapy with chatbots – Therapists will benefit from this section by learning the specific pros and cons of using chatbots to supplement therapy. They will be able to advise clients on when it can be appropriate and the risks of relying on them.
5. The future of AI / case reviews - Therapists will learn what technology leaders predict for AI in mental health in coming years. They will increase their ability to make ethical choices by exploring situations involving mental health treatment and AI, identifying relevant ethical issues, and what choices would best fulfill their ethical obligations.
